It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce, though most of you probably already know about it, Tokyo Ghoul, creates by Sui Ishida.

Tokyo Ghoul is a manga featuring Ken Kaneki, who lives in a world where humans were not at the top of the food chain. Ghouls existed here, and they survived on human meat. Kaneki, a normal, university student, goes on a date with a girl he fancies, Rize. On their way taking her to her home, she reveals that she is a ghoul, and attacks Kaneki, attempting to make him her supper. When the sudden fall of some metal pipes kills her and injures him, a doctor transplants Rize’s organs into Kaneki. It is later revealed that this made him into a half ghoul. Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki’s story as someone with a place in two completely different worlds.

In my opinion, Tokyo Ghoul, is an amazing manga. It’s so addicting, with a deep, immersive plot line. All the plot twists and sudden deaths were perfectly placed in a rather emotional roller coaster.

The characters are so detailed, with their own, unique personalities. Ken Kaneki, who is probably the perfect model of a main character that suffers and goes through hell way too many times for a single person, goes through countless obstacles, both physically and mentally, and feels wonderfully real. His emotions are raw, open, and obvious for the reader to witness, much more like a character from a novel than one from a manga.

The changes in the art style is fascinating to observe. If you look at chapter one, then at the final one, you’ll notice that Mr. Ishida Sui’s style has evolved from drawing slightly off characters into a beautiful, smoothly drawn one that illustrates a ominous world of bloodshed. All in all, the final result is absolutely gorgeous, with darker colours and an attractively more rough style that sets it apart from other manga.

Though all of what I had to say here was positive, I will have to say to avoid the anime. Huge plot holes in that, lemme tell you. But if you ever find yourself with free time, I encourage you to read a bit of Tokyo Ghoul. There is a lot of hype surrounding it, and it certainly does not disappoint. (except for in Ace’s case)

Art style: 8.5/10

Characters: 10/10

Plot line: 9/10

Bonus - Anime: 2/10

Overall rating: 9/10
